Korean Kibble

The following pictures are from a current television commercial in Korea for Aritaum cosmetics. While I know that Aritaum has no more lofty purpose than to sell as much lipstick, perfume and eyeshadow as possible, this ad actually touches on a lot of very serious issues–and I shudder at the negative messages it sends to both men and women.

It starts with a couple sitting in a patio. The man looks at his girlfriend who has the “gall” to be looking really relaxed: she has glasses on instead of contacts, her hair is up in a bun, and she’s not wearing makeup. The boyfriend’s look of disgust is followed by captions which inform the viewer that they have been dating for three years. The man laments that it seems they are more like siblings than lovers  since she’s not prettying herself up anymore.

When he sees a nearby couple acting…

“C” is for Choco, the name of my aunt’s Shih Tzu — and it also stand for “Cool!” Wouldn’t you agree? Choco is modeling a great turtleneck sweater that I made from a free Lion Brand pattern.

I knit this with Lion Brand Fun Fur and two strands of Bernat Baby Coordinates knit together.  And now Choco is ready for a night on the town~~ Looking good!

Korean Kibble

We all know how cars are referred to the feminine pronoun in the US (the Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T. being the only exception I can think of, besides Transformers), but in Korea they’ve taken it a step further!

I was out one day to enjoy some lunch at a local restaurant when I saw this car in the parking lot.  The sight made me laugh and then groan. It’s bad enough that Koreans have such a complex about their eyes (I’ve NEVER seen so many fake lashes on women in my life)…but now the cars are getting them, too! Hmm….what next? Lipstick outlines on the front license plate?

What do you think? Would you give your own car this makeover?

Jenny Lee's Jottings

I’m a self-taught calligrapher, and I’ll be the first to admit that my technique isn’t quite up to par…but this piece is still important to me because of the quotation. Samuel Johnson’s words were very helpful while I was practicing art therapy, and working through some personal issues.

What quotes or sayings have helped you through tough times?

Bzzzzzzzzzz…………. Honeycomb Poncho

I love this Honeycomb Poncho from the Lion Brand pattern library–the clever use of a cable needle creates this honeycomb pattern which looks complicated, but is remarkably easy to do.

The neckline is the only thing I modified from the original pattern–I preferred having a loose cowl neck (which I knitted in seed stitch) instead of the specified turtle-neck collar. Also, I knitted this up in Dark Rose Heather, and found this poncho to be a nice transitional piece in early spring when the weather was still a bit chilly, but not cold enough for my usual winter coat~~

Korean Kibble

Given the fact that my husband is a carpenter who builds homes for a living, I lament the ubiquitous nature of these towering concrete apartment buildings in Korea. Nevertheless, my husband and I also live in one of these–but just until we can save enough money to build our own dream home out of wood. In the meantime, I am frequently confronted with scenes like the one above: a new neighbor is moving in! But in Korea, moving companies will basically bring their own elevator!

Moving companies will not only haul all your stuff in their vans, they will basically bring their own crane to move your stuff via a platform that slides up and down the shaft through the apartment’s window. On the plus side, tenants are spared having the elevator basically commandeered by the moving company for hours on end. The down side? It’s incredibly loud and…

Braids Galore! Dutch braid buns hairstyle~~

Today was fairly warm, and I wanted my hair off my neck and back— Presto! It’s actually really easy to do, and it helps with my posture—when my hair is up like this, I find that I don’t slouch and lean back on the couch like I usually do!

Braids Galore! Dutch braid buns hairstyle~~

A very simple-to-do ‘do that looks more complicated than it is. I simply did two Dutch braids to the ends of my hair, then twisted each braid into its own little bun.

One of my favorite quotes. Hmm…I wonder what this piece says about my nature?

Jenny Lee's Jottings

This piece combines some of my favorite elements: calligraphy, water soluble pastels, red and yellow together, quotations and roses.

This quote also speaks to the heart of who I am. Having practiced a lot of art therapy, I know all too well how true this quote is.

I love how the colors pop! Hmm…maybe a tribute to other decades is in order? A poodle skirt for the 50s? A denim jacket for the 80s?

Oh, Webby– how elegant you are!

knitting nandu

Webby is ready for high society in this tailored little number! While her Pretty in Pink and Blue and Yellow Stripe Sweater make her look like a little cotton-candy fuzzball, this fitted garment really shows off her sleek and leggy physique–and yeah, I’m jealous ;)!
